Bed and Breakfast accommodations in S. California |
| The Bed & Breakfast Historic Listings
Generally the history of the Bed & Breakfast dates back the British Isles where rooms in homes were available to travelers to stay a night or two on their journey. This is where the owners were in residence, and would take care of the home between guests. Bed and Breakfast Inns were usually economical and often in more remote areas. Today the desirability of B & B’s is often related to the unique aspects, desirable locations and authentic period architecture of a home that offers guests a more intimate and interesting atmosphere in contrast to chain hotel type accommodations.
Seeking this uniqueness in Southern California, we first look to the history of the area in context of the atmosphere and architecture that may be found. California has a long and varied history from the time of the Spanish possession in the 18th century between San Francisco and San Diego that was a time of the Presidios, pueblos, the establishing of twenty-one Missions under Padre Junipero Serra and of 600 Ranchos. With the coming of the railroad in the 19th century and the great gold rush, California had the population influx and status to become a state of the United States of America. The Spanish influence mixed with the native Indian population, has always been a very strong & popular part of California’s heritage, but Los Angeles and Hollywood led the way for the Southern California extensive settlement with the subdividing of the Ranchos – La Brea and Los Feliz. In particular Hollywood brought in the period architecture reflected in large Queen Anne Victorian, and Mission Revival homes along with some Art Deco and Moderne styles to be followed in the early 20th century by Craftsman, Bungalow, and Ranch styles. Vacation homes were popular for easterners to “winter” in sunny California.
Santa Ana and Orange County have some beautiful period architecture as well. The 2nd World War saw the rapid industrialization with magnanimous contributions made by the State of California in the building of airplanes and ships for the Pacific theater mobilization. Many of the soldiers coming home after the war settled in California and added to the rapid population explosion, and the huge home building industry that followed.
